Mark Wood, a fast bowler from England, announced his retirement from international cricket on September 22, 2026. He cited a recurring knee injury that rendered him unable to continue at the highest level. Wood’s England contract was set to expire in September 2026, and he is 36 years old.

Throughout his career, Mark Wood appeared in 38 Test matches and captured 119 wickets. Additionally, he appeared in 70 one-day internationals, capturing 80 ODI wickets, and played in 38 T20 internationals, claiming 54 wickets in that format. In 2015, he made his international debut in the limited-overs format of cricket.

On November 21, 2025, he made his final international appearance in Perth during the first Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series. England was defeated by eight wickets. Wood bowled 11 overs in that match before his knee injury recurred, preventing him from participating in the remaining matches of the Ashes series. Prior to participating in the Perth Test, he had undergone surgery on his left knee in March 2025. Wood admitted that he had believed he had returned from surgery too soon.

What was the reason for Mark Wood decision to retire at this time?

Mark Wood had previously demonstrated resilience in the face of numerous severe ailments throughout his career, such as ankle issues, elbow surgery, and side strains. Nevertheless, the recurrence of his knee injury subsequent to the Perth Test was the determining factor in his decision to cease playing. Additionally, Wood discussed the distinction between this injury and previous setbacks, and he mentioned that his Central Contract status with England, which is scheduled to conclude in September, also influenced the timing of his decision..

What accomplishments did Mark Wood accomplish during his international career?

From his début in 2015 to November 2025, Mark Wood was a consistent wicket-taker for England in all three formats. On February 26, 2025, he played his final ODI against Afghanistan, and his final T20 international was against India on February 2, 2025.

In 2019, Wood was a member of the 50-over World Cup-winning squad for England. He also played a significant role in England’s T20 World Cup victory in 2022, claiming nine wickets in four games. Nevertheless, he was unable to participate in the semi-finals and final of that tournament due to an injury.

His career was characterized by a protracted injury timeline that encompassed ankle surgery in 2016, a side strain in 2019, right elbow surgery in 2022, a right thigh muscle injury in 2024, a right elbow stress injury later in 2024, and left knee ligament surgery in March 2025, all of which occurred prior to the final recurrence in Perth.
