India achieved a score of 221 for 7 in the third Twenty20 International against Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Stadium on September 17, 2026, as a result of an exceptional batting performance by Abhishek Sharma, who scored 108 off 34 balls. The brilliant innings of the juvenile batsman, which included nine fours and eleven sixes, saw him score 76 runs in the first six overs. This was the highest individual total in any men’s Twenty20 International during that time. India’s bowling attack restricted Afghanistan to 94 all out, which played a role in the country’s 127-run victory.
Abhishek Sharma achieved his century at an extraordinary pace. He surpassed the full-member T20I record that was previously held by Finn Allen and Sikandar Raza, who both scored hundreds in 33 balls. He achieved the three-figure milestone in a mere 30 deliveries. Furthermore, India’s previous benchmark, Rohit Sharma’s 35-ball century against Sri Lanka in Indore in 2017, was surpassed.
The influence of SKY on Abhishek Sharma’s unconventional approach
The young opener commended Suryakumar for consistently motivating him to optimize the powerplay, while Gambhir encouraged him to establish an attacking environment in the dressing room.
India demonstrated their powerplay dominance by scoring 100 runs in the first six overs of the contest. Gambhir’s management of the team was exemplified by this aggressive strategy, which prioritized fearless cricket during the critical early phases of T20 matches.
Abhishek Sharma also underscored that the team’s confidence and batting strategy were not impacted by India’s brief period of subpar performances following the 2026 T20 World Cup.

India’s offensive was not halted by Afghanistan’s bowling assault. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Axar Patel each claimed three wickets, resulting in a complete destruction of the opposition batting order. The victory underscored the effectiveness of the aggressive batting strategy that Abhishek had advocated during his record-breaking innings and served as a testament to India’s return to dominant performances.
