Even though the teenager has had some early success, legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev has warned about his future. Kapil Dev pointed out that Sooryavanshi has a lot of talent, but that talent by itself does not guarantee a long career at the highest level. The captain of the 1983 World Cup winning team used a straight comparison to make his point.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has had an amazing start to his career as an international child. He is only 15 years old. The young batter won the IPL Orange Cap in 2026 for getting 776 runs in 16 innings. In the Under-19 World Cup final, he hit 15 fours and 15 sixes and went on to score an unbeaten 175 runs off 80 balls. He played his first international game for India in a T20I series against England in July 2026. He is now known as one of the best young cricket players in India.
Why did Kapil Dev use Vinod Kambli’s example?
Kapil Dev stressed that time and personal growth would be better ways to measure performance than short-term metrics. The former all-rounder said that a player’s path at the international level depends on how mature they are and the choices they make about their lifestyle.
His comments made it clear that early success in local tournaments and youth competitions does not always mean that a player will go on to do well in international cricket.

As of now, Sooryavanshi is looking for his chance in the T20I squad, following the experienced opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. It will be interesting to see if Sooryavanshi gets to play in the second T20I on October 9 against W.I.
