Despite the fact that the fast bowler has a Grade 3 right hamstring tear that was sustained during a training camp on August 21, 2026, South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad has kept the door open to the possibility of Kagiso Rabada playing in the first Test against Australia, which is scheduled to take place in Durban on October 9.
Shukri Conrad addressed Rabada’s fitness on September 23, 2026, stating that the team’s medical staff will have the final say, despite his hope that the pacer will be available at some point in the series.
Shukri Conrad also discussed Rabada’s personal motivation for playing against Australia, a team against which he has a remarkable record in Test cricket.
What is the reason for the uncertainty surrounding Rabada’s fitness for the initial Test?
During a training camp in South Africa on August 21, 2026, Rabada sustained a right hamstring injury. He was initially anticipated to recover within four to five weeks of that date, which would have qualified him for the early stages of the Test series, according to Cricket South Africa.
Nevertheless, medical scans subsequently verified that the injury was a Grade 3 tear, which is defined as a complete or near-complete rupture. Consequently, the recovery period was extended to a maximum of 10 weeks. The revised estimate would result in his return being near to or beyond the commencement of the three-Test series, which is scheduled to take place in Durban on October 9, Gqeberha on October 18, and Cape Town on October 27.
Rabada was officially disqualified from South Africa’s three-match ODI series against Australia, which took place from September 24 to 30, 2026. His availability for the Test series is contingent upon the progression of his rehabilitation. Allan Donald, the bowling coach of the Lions, had previously declared that Rabada would be absent from all three Tests against Australia. This assertion appears to be at odds with Conrad’s more optimistic assessment on September 23.
What is Rabada’s record against Australia in Tests?
Shukri Conrad and South Africa are eager to have Rabada available for this series due to his reputation against Australia in Test cricket. The consistent efficacy of the right-arm pacer against this particular opposition is underscored by his 58 wickets in 11 Tests against Australia, with an average of 21.39. His most recent exceptional performance against a high-profile opponent occurred at the 2025 World Test Championship Final at Lord’s, where he contributed nine wickets to South Africa’s victory.

Despite the absence of an official Cricket South Africa statement confirming an updated medical status as of September 24, 2026, Shukri Conrad comments on September 23 indicate that South Africa has not abandoned the possibility of having their premier fast bowler available for at least a portion of the series.
