During England’s October–December 2005 tour of Pakistan, Andrew Flintoff and Shoaib Akhtar engaged in a noteworthy sledging exchange. During the second Test in Faisalabad, tensions between the two players culminated in a verbal altercation that would have immediate consequences on the field. England, under the leadership of Michael Vaughan in the Test format, suffered defeats in the three-match Test series (2-0) and the five-match ODI series (3-2) during the tour.

Prior to Flintoff’s departure, Shoaib Akhtar had repeatedly disparaged him as “fat” during the game. The England all-rounder elected to respond with a statement of his own as he prepared to bat. Flintoff’s perspective is that he made a comment about Akhtar’s bowling style and appearance in order to end the sledging.

Flintoff disclosed that his well-known comment was a response to Shoaib Akhtar’s persistent comments about his weight, which he ultimately resolved to cease.

Flintoff elected to administer Shoaib Akhtar his own medication due to his absolute determination to respond. He clarified, “I am not interested in this; I will address it immediately.” I contacted him as I was preparing to depart. The conversation between the two cricket players evolved into an unforgettable event.

Flintoff then reflected on his candid statement to the Pakistani fast bowler, stating, “I said, ‘Shoaib, it’s all right, you look like Tarzan but you bowl like Jane.'” This statement immediately captivated me. However, the England all-rounder promptly recognized that his statements had been counterproductive.

Flintoff stated that Shoaib Akhtar responded to the situation on the field almost immediately.

“I was cartwheeling back as he knocked over the first or second ball when I walked out to bat,” he recollected. Flintoff continued, “And then, as I walked away, he gave it the big hooahhhoah.”

“You are reminiscent of Tarzan, but you have a bowling style similar to Jane. This is what caused you to become agitated, correct?” During the renowned discourse on the Kathmandu Podcast, Niroula inquired of Shoaib Akhtar. Akhtar responded by recounting the circumstances that transpired prior to the incident, which occurred during an Australian competition.

Shoaib Akhtar acknowledged that he was not particularly enthusiastic about his team’s prospects, given Australia’s dominance at the time. He commented, “It was an extremely foolish idea, as Australia was performing at its peak, and Australia is destined to prevail regardless of the opponent.”

Additionally, he disclosed that, despite his reservations, he elected to participate due to financial incentives. Shoaib Akhtar clarified, “There is a World Championship taking place; I was not particularly enthusiastic about participating, but they are offering an exorbitant sum.” “Consequently, I concluded that it would be more prudent to participate in a few games and conclude my career,” he elaborated.

The fast bowler from Pakistan also stated that his knee issue impeded his tournament plans and impeded his preparations. “I sustained a knee injury and required several injections to regain my mobility,” he recollected. He continued, “So, I thought, ‘You know, let’s go out there and play a few games and take money and probably, say, rest me.'”

Akhtar’s ultimate dismissal from the squad may have influenced Flintoff’s assessment of him. He commented, “In any case, they dropped me anyway.” Akhtar continued, “So, he had that kind of impression from me that he is not being serious about this whole cricket thing.” He then speculated on how the England all-rounder would have perceived his attitude.
